Assessee is liable for refund when they pay more taxes than the actual tax liability, in such case assessee will receive a refund including interest. In some cases, assessee may notice that the refund amount received is relatively more than the actual refund amount claimed on your tax return. This is due to Interest on a tax refund is represented by this difference. If the refund is 10% or more of the tax paid, the income tax department is required to pay this. It’s possible that the department won’t pay the assessee all of the refunds. In case the assessee has any demand of taxes from a previous year and in subsequent year there is a refund due, the income tax department may adjust your refund accordingly.

Stepwise process to check refund status on NSDL
Below is the stepwise process to check refund status:
Step 1: Go to https://tin.tin.nsdl.com/oltas/refund-status-pan.html

Step 2: Enter your PAN and Select the relevant assessment year.
Now, Enter Captcha Code and Click on Proceed

Now, click on proceed button. You will be able to see the status of you refund
How to file a complaint on Income Tax Refund online directly?
Below is the stepwise process to file grievance related to Income tax refund online:
Step 1 Go to https://portal.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/e-Filing/UserLogin/LoginHome.html?lang=eng and login using your e filing login credentials.

Step 2: Now, Go to ‘e-Nivaran’ tab and Select ‘Submit Grievance’

It will redirect you to e-Nivaran form
Step 3: Filing and submission of form
Now fill the below details in form:
1. Select, Resolution sought from as “Centralized Processing Center for Income Tax Returns” from the drop down
2. Select, grievance category as “Refund” from the drop down
3. Grievance sub-category from the drop down. Select the relevant reason
4. Select the assessment year for which refund is to be sought
5. In case assessee wants to attach any document he can attach by selecting “Choose file” button
6. Under Grievance description provide the details of the problem faced.

Once the above details are filled, click on ‘Preview and Submit’ to preview and submit grievance.
