Introduction
The abbreviation PAN stands for Permanent Account Number. It’s a ten-digit number that’s never been used before. An Indian citizen, entity, or corporation must file a Form 49A application, whereas a foreign citizen, entity, or company must file a Form 49AA application. The PAN allows the department to link all of the assessee’s dealings with the department. Every transaction with the Income Tax Department now requires a Permanent Account . A PAN card is a significant photo identity card that is accepted by all government and non-government organisations in the country.

How to apply for PAN card ?
The following forms can be used to submit a PAN application
- Form 49A (for Indian Citizens)
- Form 49AA (for Foreign Citizens)
The following are the steps for submitting an online application through the NSDL website:
Step 1. Go to https://www.onlineservices.nsdl.com/paam/end UserRegisterContract.html to complete the registration process.
Step 2. From the drop-down list, choose ‘Application Type’ and ‘Category.’
Step 3. Provide the following information under ‘Applicant Information’: Title from the drop-down list, Surname, First Name, Middle Name, Date of Birth or Incorporation or Formation (if applicable), Email ID, and Mobile number.
Step 4. Make a declaration in the declaration box.
Step 5. Fill out the Captcha Code.
Step 6. Click the Submit button.
Step 7. Select ‘Continue with the PAN Application Form’ from the drop-down menu.
Step 8. Include ‘Personal Details,’ ‘Document Details,’ ‘Contact & Parent Details,’ ‘Address Details,’ and ‘Other Details’ in the appropriate places. Please upload the necessary documentation.
Step 9 . Submit an application fee payment.
Step 10. Submit and print the application form, or undergo ‘Aadhaar Authentication’ and sign the application using ‘Aadhaar based eSignature or DSC method’, depending on the Mode selected.
The following are the steps for submitting an online application through the UTIITSL website:
Step 1 . Go to https://www.pan.utiitsl.com/newA.html to get started.
Step 2 . On the homepage, click the ‘Apply for New PAN Card (Form 49A)’ icon.
Step 3 . Choose between ‘Physical Mode’ and ‘Digital Mode.’
Step 4. Choose one of the Aadhaar-based e-KYC, eSign Mode, or DSC Mode submission options.
Step 5. From the drop-down list, choose the Status of the Application.
Step 6 . Click ‘Submit’ after selecting the PAN Card Mode.
Step 7 . Include ‘Personal Details,’ ‘Document Details,’ ‘Contact & Parent Details,’ ‘Address Details,’ and ‘Other Details’ in the appropriate places. Please upload the necessary documentation.
Step 8. Submit an application fee payment.
Step 9. In case ‘Physical Mode’ is selected at STEP 3 above, the applicant will have to submit the application. Post-submission, the applicant needs to take a print-out; sign it and submit the same to the nearest UTIITSL office.
Step 10. However, if ‘Digital Mode’ is selected at STEP 3 above, the applicant will have to undergo the ‘Aadhaar Authentication’ and sign the application based on ‘Aadhaar based eSignature or DSC mode’.
The procedure for applying for a PAN Card in the offline mode is as follows:
Step 1. Download Form 49A from the Income Tax Department’s official website or from the following links: https://www.tin-nsdl.com/downloads/pan/download/Form 49A.PDF or https://www.pan.utiitsl.com/newA.html.
Step 2. Complete all required fields to the best of your ability.
Step 3. Attach two passport-sized photos.
Step 4. Attach photocopies of the proofs that have been’self-attested.’
Step 5. Pay the application fee with a demand draft made out to ‘NSDL-PAN’ and payable in Mumbai.
Step 6. Write ‘Application for PAN-N-Acknowledgement Number’ on the application form’s envelope.

procedure for checking the status of PAN Card
- PAN Card status via NSDL website
Step 1. Go to https://tin.tin.nsdl.com/pantan/StatusTrack.html
Step 2. Select ‘PAN – New/ Change Request’ as the ‘Application Type.’
Step 3. Fill in the ‘Acknowledgement Number’ field.
Step 4. Type in the code and click the ‘SUBMIT’ button.

Step 1. Go to https://www.trackpan.utiitsl.com/PANONLINE/trackApp#forward and fill out the form.
Step 2. Type in the ‘Application Coupon Number’ or ‘PAN number.’
Step 3. Fill in the blanks for ‘Date of Birth/Incorporation, etc.’
Step 4. Fill out the Captcha code.
Step 5. Press the ‘SUBMIT’ button.
- PAN Card status via SMS
SMS in the style ‘NSDLPAN 15-digit acknowledgment number>’ should be sent to ‘57575’ to follow the status of the PAN card.

Calling the TIN call centre at 020-27218080 is one of the simplest ways to track the status of your PAN card.
How do get a copy of PAN card
Step 1. Go to https://www.onlineservices.nsdl.com/paam/requestAnd DownloadEPAN.html to request and download your EPN.
Step 2. Fill in your PAN, Aadhaar Number, Date of Birth/Incorporation/Formation, and GSTN (if applicable) (if available).
Step 3. Check the box next to the verification box.
Step 4. Fill out the Captcha Code.
Step 5. Click the ‘Submit’ button.

Step 1. Go to https://www.pan.utiitsl.com/PAN ONLINE /ePANCard
Step 2. Fill in your PAN, month and year of incorporation/ agreement/ partnership/ deed, GSTIN number, and captcha code.
